From April 9–11, 2025, several researchers of the SyMoCADS team had the pleasure of attending the 9th Workshop on Molecular Communications, held at the University of Catania, Italy. The MolCom workshop serves as platform for interdisciplinary exchange in the field of molecular communications.

Alongside Bastian HeinleinLukas BrandTimo JakumeitTeena Tom Dieck, and Dr.-Ing. Maximilian Schäfer from the IDC, several members of the Research Training Group (RTG) SyMoCADS also attended the MolCom workshop. The SyMoCADS delegation included PhD researchers Maike SchererDaniela WegnerLea ErbacherLuiz WilleKeyu XiaoSilvana ZurmühlKaikai ZhuSümeyye Yilmaz, and Prof. Jens Kirchner. Moreover, Prof. Kathrin Castiglione, who jointly coordinates the RTG with Prof. Robert Schober, attended the workshop.

SyMoCADS researchers contributed to the following works presented at the workshop:

  • Symbol Detection and Molecule Mixture Design for Non-linear Receiver Arrays in MC
  • Entropy Production in Synthetic MC
  • Realizable Transmitters for Diffusive Molecular Communication
  • Nanoscale pH Sensing and Control for Molecular Communication Applications
  • Experimental Polymersome-based Receiver Design for Molecular Communication
  • Experimental Study of Particle Accumulation in a CAM-based MC Testbed

Furthermore, Dr.-Ing. Maximilian Schäfer served on the steering committee for the MolCom workshop.

Besides the scientific exchange, the workshop also provided a great framework for informal conversations with researchers from other groups during the social program. Finally, Timo Jakumeit was officially named the winner of the logo competition for the IEEE Communication Society Technical Committee on Molecular, Biological and Multi-Scale Communications.
